Attar is perfume in its oldest form: aromatic material carried in oil rather than alcohol.
Oil, not alcohol An eau de parfum is mostly alcohol. It flashes bright, projects for an hour, then thins. An attar has no alcohol to evaporate. The oil sits in the warmth of the skin and releases slowly, which is why a single application reads for eight to twelve hours and often longer on fabric.
Distilled, not compounded Traditional attars are distilled — rose, oud, saffron, sandalwood — with the vapour received into a base oil over days. That patience is what gives the material its roundness. Nothing about it is fast.
How to read a pyramid Because there is no alcohol lift, the top notes of an attar are quieter and the heart arrives sooner. What most people call the drydown is, in an attar, simply the perfume.
Wearing it Two touches: the inner wrist and behind the ear. Do not rub. Let the oil warm on its own.
