What Is Attar? The Alcohol-Free Perfume Oil Explained

Attar is concentrated perfume oil with no alcohol and no water. Here is what it actually is, how it differs from spray perfume, and how to judge a good one.

Ask ten people in India what attar is and you will get ten answers. Some say it is the scent from the mosque lane. Some say it is what their grandfather kept in a tiny glass bottle wrapped in cotton. Both are right, but neither is the full answer.

Attar is concentrated perfume oil with no alcohol and no water in it. That single sentence explains almost everything else about how it smells, how long it lasts and why it is worn differently from a spray.

Where the word comes from

Attar, or ittar, comes from the Persian word for fragrance. The craft travelled with trade and settled deeply in India, above all in Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh, where roses and jasmine are still distilled every season in copper vessels. For centuries there was no alcohol in perfumery here at all. Flowers were distilled directly into sandalwood oil, and the oil carried the scent.

What actually goes into an attar

A traditional attar has two parts.

• The aromatic material — rose, jasmine, kewda, saffron, oud, musk accords, spices, resins, leather accords.
• The carrier — historically sandalwood oil, today often a light odourless base or a blend of fixatives that hold the composition together.

There is no ethanol to flash off, and no water to dilute. What you roll onto your skin is the perfume itself, at full strength.

Attar vs perfume: the honest comparison

Spray perfume is roughly 10 to 20 percent fragrance oil dissolved in alcohol. The alcohol evaporates in seconds, throwing the scent outward in a cloud. That is why a spray announces you the moment you walk in, and why it can fade faster than you expect.

Attar has no evaporation carrier. It warms with your body instead of leaping off it.

• Projection: perfume is louder in the first hour, attar stays closer to the skin.
• Longevity: attar usually outlasts an equivalent spray, because nothing is carrying the scent away.
• Skin: alcohol dries skin and can sting after shaving. Oil does not.
• Quantity: one 6ml attar bottle can outlast a 50ml spray, because a single application is one or two dabs.
• Travel and prayer: alcohol-free means no restrictions, and no spill of a flammable liquid in a bag.

How to judge a good attar

You do not need a trained nose to separate a serious attar from a cheap one.

• Smell it after four hours, not four seconds. Poor oils are loud at the opening and empty by lunch. A good composition changes and keeps a base.
• Look at the oil. It should be clear, evenly coloured and free of cloudiness.
• Check the burn. A well-made attar never stings on clean skin.
• Ask about lasting power honestly. Fresh citrus and aquatic notes will never last as long as oud, amber or leather, whatever anyone claims.

If you have never worn an oil before, start with something warm rather than sharp — a soft oud or a vanilla — because warm notes are the most forgiving on skin that is not used to concentrated perfume.
